Discover Henri de Toulouse Lautrec at the Grand Palais
Toulouse-Lautrec; Resolutely Modern. Just the name of the exhibition arouses curiosity, especially when we know that the artist died in the early 1900s. But there is indeed much of interest in the life and work of the painter, printmaker, draughtsman, illustrator and caricaturist, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Born of an aristocratic family, the son of a count, he disdained the values of his class and valued freedom in all its forms. He painted the world of prostitution, illustrated male nudes, drew women whose bodies bore the imprint of time... so many topics that did not necessarily inspire the artists of the period. And yet, he dared to go his own way, creating a body of work that reveals both vices and virtues, and vividly depicting the horses about which he cared so deeply.
A completely new exhibition close to the Hotel Saint-Jacques
From October 9th, 2019 to January 27th, 2020, the Grand Palais will be transformed into a unique exhibition venue. Nearly 200 works will be gathered for the occasion. They reveal the hidden facets of a noble life, luxury and lust. When contemplating the works of Toulouse-Lautrec, you will find that his subjects were not particularly beautiful. They were men and women who reflected humanity in all its imperfections, portrayed without idealism. Reality and authenticity can be appreciated in each work; a beautiful way to revel in the exceptional talent of an artist who died at only 36 years old.
